Developing a spatial data infrastructure from the bottom up
Since its development started in 1996 the Land Information System Tasmania (LIST) has grown to offer new services and information and has incorporated new technologies based on incremental development plans. While it has been highly successful, it was considered timely to see if it still offers the right range of services and information in the right way for both the community and government.
The Tasmanian Government initiated the LIST Strategic Directions Project in July 2005. The LIST Strategic Directions Project aimed to manage a range of activities required to determine strategic directions for LIST over the next five years. It included a comprehensive overview of all of LIST components and outlined how each of the components will be generated, funded and delivered in the future. The Project delivered a range of outputs relating to;
An assessment of future demand and needs,
Recommendations for a suitable governance arrangements,
A LIST Communication Strategy,
An assessment of legal liability issues,
A Business Plan for the re-development of the LIST Technical Infrastructure,
A report on funding opportunities for LIST,
An evaluation of data management practices,
Recommendations for an improved licensing arrangements, and
Development of a privacy standard.
This presentation will provide some backgrounnd on the history of the LIST, outline the strategic directions emanating from the Project, examine the issues encountered during the Project and provide some lessons learnt from developing a spatial data infrastructure from the bottom up.
