On the Role of Geodesy in the Information Revolution
The geo-referencing of information has emerged as one of the strongest innovations in the information industry over the last decade. Increasingly the assignment of position as an attribute to a variety of data previously considered to be position independent has shown benefit. The new tendency will be towards improving the accuracy of this positional data which will allow better integration of disparate data sets.
Australia's National Geospatial Reference System is the foundation upon which positional accuracy is based. In order to refine positional accuracy the underpinning reference frame and the associated tools used for realising the frame will need to be enhanced. This paper will detail current efforts to achieve this outcome.
