Shared Land Information Platform - powering the information generation in Western Australia

  • The Shared Land Information Platform (SLIP) is a Western Australian success story. Through the Department of Land Information and the Western Australian Land Information System (WALIS), the State Government initiated the $26 million SLIP project in early 2005.
SLIP has now connected 15 state government agencies to provide real time access to over 100 datasets with at least a further 100 datasets planned during 2007. While the initial four focus areas; emergency management, natural resource management, electronic land development processes and register of interests in land, were to develop prototypes as part of the SLIP implementation plan, two have now been turned into functioning systems.
The initial drivers for SLIP were to enable better decision making and more efficient government services. The initial focus areas have spawned interest in other sectors and new focus areas have been developed.
In providing this future focussed environment, SLIP has had to embrace developing open standards and challenge existing models for spatial data. This paper will provide an update to the SLIP paper presented at the SSC 2005, including the technical environment, the capabilities that have been delivered and describe some of the challenges in delivering a cross-government project as the forefront of spatial information technology.
